January 2025
The Australian Women’s and Gender Studies Association (AWGSA) is deeply concerned about the Queensland Government’s recent decision to halt new hormone treatments for transgender youth under 18, pending a review not due until 2026. This action disregards substantial research demonstrating the benefits of gender-affirming care.
Studies have consistently shown that access to puberty blockers and hormone therapies significantly improves mental health outcomes for transgender youth. Research indicates that these treatments are associated with lower rates of depression, reduced suicide attempts, and enhanced overall well-being. Major medical organisations endorse these interventions as part of evidence-based, gender-affirming care.
The imposed ban not only contradicts established medical evidence but also places vulnerable young individuals at increased risk. Denying access to necessary care can lead to heightened gender dysphoria, mental health challenges, and a greater risk of self-harm among transgender youth. According to Open Doors Youth Service Inc., Queensland’s only dedicated LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy (SB) youth service, there are 491 young people on the waitlist for the Queensland Children’s Gender Clinic who can no longer access life saving care (2025).
In response to this decision, communities across Australia are organising protests to advocate for the rights and well-being of transgender youth. A National Day of Action is planned for Saturday, 8 February 2025, with rallies scheduled in various cities. These family-friendly events aim to unite supporters in demanding the reversal of the ban and the reinstatement of access to essential medical care for transgender youth.
If you are able to attend one of these events tomorrow (or Sunday for Adelaide), please do so:
We understand that not everyone can protest in person, these are other actions you can take:
- Share your concerns with others
- Write to Tim Nicholls, the Queensland Health Minister: health@ministerial.qld.gov.au
- Sign this petition: https://transjustice.org.au/ban/
- For QLD residents only, https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/Work-of-the-Assembly/Petitions/Petition-Details?id=4202
- Donate to Trans Justice Project: https://transjustice.org.au/donate/
Collective action is crucial in supporting the rights and health of transgender youth in our community.
